Chevrolet Thornton military trucks lined up at Caerphilly Works, 1941
This image taken in April 1941 shows five Chevrolet Thornton military trucks lined up outside the GWR's works at Caerphilly. These trucks were imported from the USA and arrived unassembled in crates. They were then assembled in full at the Works. In March 1941 the Lend-Lease scheme was enacted. This was a program that allowed the USA to supply, or effectively lease, material and goods to Britain and the Allied forces. This included munitions, food, land vehicles, ships and aircraft. The trucks in this photograph have been painted in military camouflage colours and were likely destined for France
