Kilve Chantry, North Somerset, Early 20th Century
A GWR Publicity view of Kilve Chantry ruins at Kilve in north Somerset. The Chantry (otherwise known as the Priory) was first built in 1329. The buildings are Grade II listed and have been in decline since before the dissolution of the monasteries. In this photograph the walls of the Chantry are covered in ivy

South Embankment, Dartmouth, August 1950
The steamer, the PS Compton Castle, is moored at the South Embankment in Dartmouth. It is packed full of visitors embarking after using the ferry crossing from Kingswear. In the background the GWR steamer, the Mew, can be seen. In 1950 it was being operated by British Railways

Chester Racecourse, Cheshire, July 1929
A GWR Publicity view of the city of Chester taken from the racecourse, Cheshire, July 1929. Chester Racecourse was established in 1539, making it the world's oldest racecourse still in operation today. The centre of the racecourse is being used for grazing and the towers of many of the city's churches including Chester Cathedral are visible in the distance
