Kingsley Statue and Quayside, Bideford, c. 1930s

A GWR publicity view of the statue of 19th century social and work reformer, Charles Kingsley and the promenade at Bideford in Devon. The statue was erected in 1906 and was granted Grade II listed status in the 1970s. Charles Kingsleys novel Westward Ho! caused an influx of tourism to north Devon, resulting in the construction of the Bideford, Westward Ho! and Appledore Railway between 1901 and 1908
