Richard Beeching, or Dr Beeching, seen at Laira Diesel Depot in March 1962, was Chairman of British Railways between 1961 and 1965. He was most famous for the Beeching Report - The Reshaping of British Railways - which recommended the closure of thousands of miles of track and hundreds of railway stations around the UK
