Bomb damage to No. 24 shop at Swindon Works in 1942
Swindon Works should have been a prime target for the German Luftwaffe, but the Works remained relatively unscathed from any air raids on the town. This image taken on 27th July 1942 shows a bomb crater on the edge of No.24 Shop in the Carriage and Wagon Works. This was not a direct hit, but the damaged roof and shattered windows of No.24 Shop illustrates the force of such a bomb explosion. Several workmen are examining the crater, probably thankful the bomb did not land any closer
