A group of female employees are welding the superheaters for locomotive boilers in P1 Shop. As rail operation was essential to the war effort, so too was the maintenance of existing rolling stock and the construction of new vehicles to ensure that the railways could keep going. This was a point stressed by the Ministry of War Transport who met regularly with GWR management to ensure that targets were being met
