Sandbag protection at Birmingham Snow Hill Station

Railway stations were on high alert during the war years. The principal stations on the GWR network were used by hundreds of people each day and a direct bomb strike on any of these stations could potentially cause multiple fatalities. Air raid precautions were put in place to minimise the effect of bomb damage. This image of Birmingham Snow Hill Station shows the use of sandbags to protect buildings, and their occupants, from fire and shrapnel damage
