Polish and Sewing Shop outing, c1920s
Staff outings were a popular part of GWR working life. This image from the 1920s shows a group of women who worked in the Polishing and Sewing Shops at Swindon Works. The women are dressed in their best clothes with many of them never having been on a trip before. Sat in the middle of the vehicle are two older ladies. They were probably widows, trying to support themselves financially. Once married you were expected to leave employment, but if widowed you could return
