GWRs Home Guard battalions on parade at Castle Bar Park in London, c. 1940

The Home Guard was originally known as the Local Defence Volunteers (LDV). The LDV was formed in May 1940, but in August 1940 the LDV changed its name to the Home Guard. Over 1 million men joined the Home Guard; their purpose to defend British shores against invasion from Germany. The GWR saw the need to protect their own property during World War II and formed their own official Home Guard battalions and platoons. Fluted cardboard backing held with clips. Supplied ready to hang with sawtooth hanger and rubber bumpers. Spot clean with a damp cloth. Packaged foam wrapped in a card.
