Kingsley Statue and Quayside, Bideford, c.1930s

A GWR publicity view of the statue of 19th century social and work reformer, Charles Kingsley and the promenade at Bideford in Devon. The statue was erected in 1906 and was granted Grade II listed status in the 1970s. Charles Kingsley's novel Westward Ho! caused an influx of tourism to north Devon, resulting in the construction of the Bideford, Westward Ho! and Appledore Railway between 1901 and 1908

The Victoria Pavilion opened at the Capstone Parade in 1888 and was rebuilt in the 1920s as a concert hall. It was demolished in the 1990s after a storm damaged the building. The Landmark Theatre now stands in its place on the Promenade
