16 inch naval gun loaded on a set of four POLLEN E wagons, 1944

This image shows a 16 inch naval gun being carried on a set of four POLLEN E wagons in March 1944. Built in the early 1900s, this POLLEN E set was capable of taking 30 tons of weight on each wagon when spread evenly. The wagons were specially adapted to carry these guns and used chocks and trestles to rest the weight of the breech and barrel along its length. The guns were loaded onto the wagons by crane inside the workshops at Swindon Works
