Railway carriage converted to an ambulance ward car, c1939
This internal view of an ambulance ward car gives a clear image of both the ingenuity used in converting rolling stock for medical use, but also the cramped conditions endured within these vehicles. Each ward car was fitted with a tier of three beds along each side. The beds could be arranged for either lying down or could be folded against the wall when not in use. Note the straps around the underside of the beds and coming down the side of the ceiling that held the beds securely in place. This appears to be a staged publicity shot judging by the smiles of the casualties who are all keen to ensure that they are captured in the shot
