The station opened in March 1862 and closed in January 1971. In the late 1970s and early 1980s Bishops Lydeard station became the terminus of the West Somerset Railway heritage line. In 2019 the station was finally reconnected to the national rail network when the GWR agreed to Saturday services in the summer from Taunton. The goods shed at Bishops Lydeard is now used as a visitor centre and museum
